Alex Perez
Alex Perez is the senior vice president and general counsel at The New School, where he leads the university’s legal affairs, advising and providing guidance on a wide range of legal matters to academic and administrative leaders and the Board of Trustees.
Perez reports directly to the president and is a member of the president’s Leadership Team.
Before joining The New School, Perez served as senior vice chancellor and chief of staff for Rutgers University—New Brunswick, overseeing a broad spectrum of administrative, operational, and service functions for various Rutgers–New Brunswick units. Earlier
he worked in the Rutgers University Office of the General Counsel, where he provided legal advice on all aspects of education law, including student affairs, faculty matters, governance issues, athletics, and academic affairs.
Perez started his legal career as an associate in the general practice group at Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP, in New York City, where he focused on securities, corporate governance, and general transactional matters, working for such clients as Goldman Sachs,
AT&T, and Chrysler. He received a BA from Columbia University and a JD from Northwestern University School of Law, where he served as an articles editor of the Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property. He is admitted to practice law
in New Jersey and New York. Perez is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and frequently presents and speaks on topics relating to athletics and international matters.
