All members of the university community, including staff, faculty, and students, are welcome to seek guidance from the ombuds for academic or work-related concerns.
We follow the International Ombuds Association’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The ombuds does not keep formal records for the university and is not authorized
to accept claims against The New School. Our services are
- Confidential: Conversations are private unless there is an imminent risk of serious harm or the visitor gives permission to share or inquire about a matter.
- Informal: We are not part of any formal complaint or disciplinary process.
- Independent: We are separate and distinct from all other university offices.
- Impartial: We do not take sides; rather, we serve as an advocate for fairness and understanding.
Services We Offer
Trainings
We offer customized training and workshops on topics such as conflict transformation, effective communication, active listening, navigating difficult conversations, and restorative justice. Sessions are available for student groups, faculty,
and staff and can be tailored to specific departmental or organizational needs.
Consultations
The ombuds provides confidential, one-on-one consultations to help individuals handle concerns, resolve conflicts, and understand policies and procedures. Whether you're facing a misunderstanding, experiencing a challenging situation,
or feeling unsure about how to move forward, the ombuds can help you explore your options, provide coaching, and identify strategies in a neutral, supportive space.
Campus Engagement and Outreach
We participate in community-building initiatives, provide educational outreach, and collaborate with campus partners to promote a culture of respect, fairness, and inclusion. Forms of outreach may include presentations,
group dialogues, and partnering on university-wide efforts to foster well-being in the community.
Organizational Advisement
We are available to advise unit leads looking to improve organizational culture and help unit members better their interpersonal skills, conflict management techniques, or effectiveness as leaders. We adhere to principles
of self-reflection, accountability, and professional growth.
If you are interested in training or other campus engagement opportunities submit a request.
