• Academic Standards

  • The Office of Academic Standards (OAS) upholds academic policies and standards set forth by The New School. It is a central resource for maintaining fairness and accountability and is pivotal in ensuring integrity and adherence to established principles.

OAS's key functions and responsibilities include overseeing the university's policy on academic integrity, academic standing review, and appeals related to registration and tuition refund.

    Academic Integrity

The New School views academic integrity as the duty of every community member. Claiming authorship for one’s own work and only for that work, recognizing the contributions of others accurately and completely, and presenting one’s academic circumstances and achievements accurately and completely are fundamental obligations to the integrity of intellectual, creative, and scholarly pursuits. All members of the university community are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the standards of academic integrity outlined in the full policy.

The University Learning Center offers a variety of academic integrity resources to both students and faculty, including in-class workshops and tutoring sessions with a focus on academic integrity.

    Academic Standing

Academic standing is reviewed at the end of every semester to determine each degree-seeking student's progress toward fulfilling degree requirements. Students are responsible for meeting all department and program academic requirements to remain in good standing. The New School Academic Catalog outlines school-specific policies relating to academic standing.

    University Appeals Committee

The University Appeals Committee is a hearing body for exception requests related to Registration and Tuition Refund policies. It is composed of members of the New School community, representing the offices of Academic Advising and Career Development, Financial Aid, the Provost, the Registrar, Student Accounts, and Student Support and Advocacy. All appeals must be submitted via the official University Appeals form.
