Overview
The Music for Collaborative Media minor is offered through the College of Performing Arts.
Housed in both Mannes School of Music and the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, the Music for Collaborative Media minor is designed to give music makers a deeper understanding of visual media with which they wish to engage—film, television, game
design, installation, and more. Students will participate in analysis, build technical skills, and develop their capacity for collaborative making.
The minor will:
- Help music makers build relationship-building and communication skills with partners outside of their discipline
- Foster collaborative models that transcend the work-for-hire structures most commonly connected with composer–media maker relationships
- Enable students to engage in experimentation as they develop their ability to connect music with moving images in television, theater, film, installation, Web-based experiences, and other media
Curriculum
This minor requires the successful completion of 18 credits. Students generally select one course from each of the subject areas in the chart below.
Course availability may vary from semester to semester. Some courses may be in development and offered at a later time. Students who wish to pursue alternative coursework in other subject areas to fulfill the minor’s requirements should consult with their
advisors.
Students pursuing majors that require any of the courses listed in the Media Understanding, Production Skills, and Collaborative Making areas must substitute approved electives for courses in these areas.
Learning Outcomes
A student who has completed this undergraduate minor will be able to:
- Communicate verbally and in writing fundamental concepts involved in the production of a visual medium with which they will collaborate
- Demonstrate basic skills in visual media making, including cinematography, editing, sound design, and direction

Eligibility
The Music for Collaborative Media minor is open to any undergraduate student at The New School. Although some courses within the minor may have prerequisites, the minor as a whole is open to undergraduate music makers from across the university.
Students can retroactively apply successfully completed courses toward a minor upon declaring or applying. After a student successfully completes the requirements of a minor, the minor will appear on the student’s academic transcript at graduation.
