• Student Advisors

  • Nearly every program at NSSR is served by student advisors. Student advisors are NSSR students who assist fellow students in planning their programs of study, providing advice on program requirements, general information, and help with course registration. They also act as liaisons between students and faculty and participate in orientation activities for new students. Students are expected to consult their faculty and student advisors at least once each semester.

Creative Writing MFA and Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism MA students are advised by Lori Lynn Turner, the associate director of Student Affairs for these programs.

Course registration happens online in April for the summer and fall semesters and in November for the spring semester. For more information about registering for classes, please visit the University Registrar page.

New students can learn more about additional university support services, financial aid information, and more on the Student Resources page.

What I Love About Creative Writing Students

It's an honor to witness the transformation of graduate writing students from our first time meeting to the day I read their names as they cross the stage at the recognition ceremony and everything in between. The highlight and culmination of the program is the two dazzling nights in May when the students about to graduate read from their theses. The readings are as celebratory as the graduation itself. When students decide to come to the program, they may live in one of the five boroughs, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Philly, or they may travel a great distance to attend school. They often do not know a single person. It happens almost magically that they find their people. What I always tell incoming MFA students is that you may find your lifelong friends and writing community here. I know I did as an alum of the MFA program in Nonfiction. I advocate for and advise graduate writing students and champion them along their journey and beyond—attending their readings, their book launches, their weddings. Once at The New School, we held a memorial for a beloved student.

What I Love About CPCJ Students

I'm excited for the collaboration between the Creative Writing Program and the Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism Program. It's a perfect match. Public Seminar, a much-respected publication at NSSR, is co-edited  by an alum of the MFA program. I’m new to advising CPCJ students, but I marvel at the flexibility of the program and the variety of fascinating courses that the students can take. I look forward to getting to know the CPCJ students and finding out more about their vibrant community. I'm ready to cheer for them alongside the MFA students!

    Favorite Book

If I had to list every book published by an alum of the MFA program that stands as one of my favorites, I would need to write a book simply giving their names! I don’t want to leave anyone out, but I must name one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors: The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa.
