• The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is an integral part of the university's efforts to promote the well-being of our students. The New School offers a health insurance plan to all degree (including online-only) students, as well as visiting, mobility (study abroad), maintenance-of-status, Lang and Parsons consortium, ESL + Certificate, graduate credit certificate, and graduate and undergraduate degree non-matriculating students. Students enrolling through the Continuing and Professional Education program are not eligible and are not charged for student health insurance.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, The New School will continue to partner with Aetna Student Health (ASH) to provide the student health insurance coverage.

All eligible students are automatically billed for the SHIP each semester upon registration. Students must choose to enroll in the plan or request a waiver by the posted deadlines. The enrollment and waiver forms for the 2025–2026 school year will be available at universityhealthplans.com/tns beginning May 1. The deadline to submit an enrollment or waiver form for fall 2025 is September 9, 2025.

    How It Works

    • All students are required to have health insurance that provides comprehensive coverage where they are located.
    • Students' insurance plans do not need to be U.S.-based or ACA-compliant in order for them to be eligible to waive the SHIP.
    • All students are automatically charged for student health insurance upon registration.
    • Students who want coverage under the SHIP must submit an enrollment form. We recommend that you submit the enrollment form at least two weeks before the date coverage begins (which is August 20, 2025, for the fall 2025 semester) to ensure that your member ID card is available when coverage begins.
    • Students with their own health insurance coverage must submit a waiver form.
    • Students who do not take any action before the waiver deadline will be responsible for payment of the health insurance fee.
    • Students need to submit a waiver form only once every academic year. Waiver forms submitted in the fall 2025 semester will be applied to both fall 2025 and spring 2026.
    • If you enroll in the student plan in the fall, your coverage will continue automatically in the spring semester as long as you have registered for spring. Please note that a delay with your spring registration can cause a delay with your spring health insurance enrollment.

    2025–2026 Health Insurance Plan

    • The annual premium will be announced later this summer pending final review by New York State.
      • The fall 2025 coverage period is August 20, 2025, through January 14, 2026.
      • The spring 2026 coverage period is January 15 through August 19, 2026.
    • The student health insurance provider is Aetna Student Health. The student health insurance provider administers the insurance plan and pays the claims.
    • The plan is an Aetna Open Choice PPO Plan.
    • University Health Plans is the insurance broker. The insurance broker handles the enrollment and waiver processes, including dependent and OPT enrollment.
